Next week, schools around the country will be celebrating ‘Science Week’.
Here at Sunny Bank Primary School we have planned lots of opportunities for the children to become scientists and start investigating. There will be whole school investigations, assemblies and lessons that have a science link to them.
The theme for this year’s Science Week is ‘Our Diverse Planet’. As you are aware, the crisis we currently have with the amount of plastics in the ocean is devastating. During the week, we will be looking at ways we can decrease the amount of plastics we use to ensure we are doing our best to help look after our environment. We will be creating posters and the winners will receive prizes!
For the first year, Sunny Bank will be taking part in a fantastic science fair organised by Halfway Houses Primary School. This will involve winners from schools around the area and on the Island. So what do you need to do? Each school will host their own Science Fair, ours will be on Thursday 12th March – parents are invited to come and see all our superb entries from 2.30pm and four winners from each school will be selected. There will be a winner from Reception, Year 1/2, Year 3/4 and Year 5/6.
For the Science Fair we are inviting each child to participate by creating a scientific project at home that will need to be brought into school on Thursday 12th March. This should include the project itself with scientific explanations including diagrams, pictures, written explanations and/or photos. Please ensure all projects are labelled with the child’s name and class. All projects should be taken to your child’s classroom in the morning, ready for the fair in the afternoon.
The winners from each school will then attend Halfway Houses Primary school on Friday 13th March where three overall winners will be chosen.
Ideas will be discussed with children in assembly and in class. There is a lot of information online – so please google search ‘science projects for children’. Some of these ideas include making slime, creating the different components of blood, exploring sound by making a string telephone, making a lava lamp and many more.
