BADGERS CLASS - The Gruffalo Competition 2019

Year three and four Badgers will have an exciting opportunity to take part in a national literary competition! For their Term 5/6 English homework challenge, they will be entering “The Gruffalo Competition 2019”, brought to us by Pan Macmillan and the National Literacy Trust.

To enter, pupils are challenged to write the story of what happened next to their favourite character from The Gruffalo. Entries will be accepted as prose, illustration or as a combination of both. Prose entries should be no longer than 250 words. Illustration entries should be no more than one side of A4 paper. Combination entries should in total cover no more than one A4 side of paper.

The winning pupil will win a signed copy of The Gruffalo and a Gruffalo hamper. The school of the winning pupil will receive win £250 RRP worth of Pan Macmillan books. Each of the 20 children chosen as competition runners up will win a signed copy of The Gruffalo.

I will provide the names of the pupils we are entering into the competition. All year three and four students are expected to make a submission, using their best efforts. Submissions may be typed or hand written, but remember – the judges have to be able to read them!

Final drafts are due Thursday, June 27, 2019, so that I have enough time to complete paper work and submit their entries.

Students have nearly two months to read the story, think up ideas, plan their story and do the writing. In preparation for their final entry, I ask that students have a rough draft for me to review, so I can see if they are on track. This rough draft is due Thursday, June 6, 2019. I will check what planning, writing, drawing etc. they have done so far; however, I cannot coach students, so they enter the competition fairly, using their own knowledge and ideas. There are certificates for every student that enters the competition, so please encourage your child to try their best! Also, please take some time to read the story with your children, or view the animation here:

I look forward to every child being creative and ready to give it their best! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me via the school office. In addition, please see the “Rules for entry” document for more detailed information.

Yours sincerely

Mr. Straughan
